The premise being slightly different to a standard mission. Your game is now fought over more than the usual objectives. The objectives are placed on table by a third party, each obj is rated in points ranging from 1 to no more than 5 and for a total of 12 points in all. The obj are taken by standard method, in the mission we played once taken they could be left but remain in the victors possesion until captured by the opposition. But different rules apply to different missions. <br>
In ours the mission was simple... take 8 points on or after turn 4 and the game is yours, failing standard parameters, company morale failure or total destruction. <br>
Skip was taking jerry and I was taking the aussies (borrowed from a pal), at this point I realised I needed something mobile, and as it turned out I should have taken more. Hey hindsights a beautiful thing. <br>
So, to my plan, with ten platoons in comparison to skips 8, I was gonna see his panzers before he'd see my 25 pdrs (MW game), this mission is just like free for all accept you're much closer and depending on obj placement you have to engage and quickly, which is how we like it! So as the polite fellows we are, we thought we'd oblige. As it panned out my UC's held off an advance by probing jerry recon on my left flank (1pt obj) and if they'd driven round have faced 3-4 25 pdrs, the bofors AA did the same on the right (2pt obj) with a short vickers platoon in support. The Matildas and 1st platoon advanced with 25's in support on the next 3 pointer in skips half, mine was already safe (straddled by 2nd & 3rd platoon either side), ha! Skip pushed up into town, his pioneers moving up through the wadi supported by panzers, recon and 10.5's. 3rd platoon thought they'd have summa that so off they headed, however the dice gods thought different as I failed several infantry saves on the way in, but hey the proverbial happens, so toe to toe time, once again the dice gods ignored me or thought they'd twist my melon. See the pic below for two separate rounds of assault dice. So that was 3rd platoon gone. 1st platoon and the tildas made their way onto the 3 pointer, although I waved goodbye to the brits. 2nd platoon dissappeared along with a UC platoon in a similarly spectacular way to 3rd platoon, they were turned back by 7 out of 8 4+'s and more rare infantry saves. And then decided that they no longer wanted to stay in the fight and take the c.o. along with them. Skip made my vickers pay for moving out into the open. Time wasn't on our side, but the game was over, it was and could only be skips. If skip hadn't failed some earlier firepower tests, would I have made it to that 3 pointer? The game was a blast, I love the 25pdrs along with the british rules for them, I'm glad to see my FV troops performing to the best of my opositions ability, but like the Murphys... Loved the mission and it panned out as we expected, a nice fist fight in the middle. Here's to the next domination game.</p><p dir="ltr">See the below link to the I95 domination PDF.</p><p dir="ltr">http://forum.wwpd.net/resources/Complete%20Domination%20Missions..pdf</p>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Alright all?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
I know it's been a while, almost a year, so where n what have I been in that time, well apart from the kids, life, births (couple, not mine), deaths (at least 3 in close family), stressed, the council, touring britain from south to north an back. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a>Main reason for absence, no decent internet access, ever tried uploading pics from ure phone with a crap connection? My advice, don't bother, as our hobby is a visual splendour, text doesn't really cut it, an rather than putting youse off I thought i'd stay quiet, the council predicted our house adaptions to takesomewhere between 3-4 months, 6 months down the line and too many cock ups too list. We're back, although I sit here surrounded by boxes an bin liners (no i've not done a lady gaga, although most would agree I am the latter).</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
So hobbywise, after talk of the brighton bash tourney being d-day based I thought I can take my f.j.'s add the at boxes, some obstacles and a captured panzer platoon and form the brest company, i've managed to finally finish my AT boxes, from small styrofoam boxes do pak40 at boxes grow. Using Mike Haughts guide, antenocitti's french propaganda posters and the infamous and now out of print (heard through the grapevine these were changing hands for big dollars recently) modeldads french decals. I got them finished to a playable standard, if anyones interested in any of the processes in any of the thread I can post a more extensive explanation and a lot more pics.<br />

I finished my LRDG and off to the Milton Keynes tourney we went, I was consistant, I lost every one of my 5 games, my closest being a 3-4 (my favourite game btw, not just the score) however we (3 members of brighton warlords) managed to place 2nd in our league, which meant we got a trophy, honestly I was and am still well chuffed. Thankyou Skip for pulling me out of the mire. I tried to play using somebody elses set up, but not being that person doesn't help. Have been playing better since I swapped my tirraileurs out for commandos (which was my original plan), do commandos chew up other infantry, oh and p.s. I'm glad I put so much effort into my SAS, as they are the dogs!</div>

So since finishing my boys from chad (tirraileurs support for the LRDG), I've added another combat platoon (there's a few fez's in there), a mortar platoon, HQ and a 60mm mortar SP truck to my Decouverte (the french LRDG), i'm currently constructing the flatbeds for the Breda 20mm SP trucks then it'll just be a question of getting another couple of bases done for my magnetised hot swappable AT/AA/Arti, covers almost all the desert forces in Burning Empires cheapskate armies. :) This will all bleed into being able to field the FF and Vichy forces.</div>

So onto the latest project and my current favourite Japan, the weekend I decided to take them on as a new force (wargames illustrated helped, as soon as I read the japanese rules I was hooked), on the sunday my mum came over with a copy of a photo for me she'd found in with a load of my grans stuff (she died earlier this year), it's a picture of my great grandad (Jack "oogie" Noakes) shaking hands with Emperor Hirohito, so no turning back now. In regards to the pic I'd assumed it was taken in the thirties, my great grandad was out in the far east trying to flog the Beardsmore Inflexible (monoplane bomber) he'd help designed and tested. But upon closer inspection of the pic both my GG and hirhito look to be in their twenties, an the houses in the background don't appear to be of Japanese origin. So as I recently found out due to my daughters school project hirohito was the first of the Imperial Japanese Family to leave Japan and went on a tour of Europe in 1926 and maybe the pic was taken at this time, any help in dating this would be useful.</div>

My first raid.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
After taking my long flames sabatical, i was painting honest, I was finally back in the pew or driving seat.
Praying to the flames dice gods has returned, and about time too,
this being my third, yes third game of the new V3 rules, the club
adopted the new ones within the first month of release, it shows how
out of action i've been.
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
To the desert and my
first outing of my LRDG and the mission, aptly titled The Raid. My
german opponent Safetystick being the kind soul that he is gave me
the option to pick, I decided on EW as I thought my oppo would get
even more m.g.s for his buck, kradshutzen the idea made me shudder
pre-game. I took HQ, T & G full half patrols, 2 x 0.5” vickers,
four extra hull mounted m.g.s per patrol and opted for the breda over
the bofors, knowing that I didn't want to get into a shoot out and
that 1 extra ROF and a 360 degree field of fire (AA) would come in
useful on the move. And finally and by no means least 200 points of
interdiction (a raiders must). As it turned out it was never needed,
but I wouldn't leave Siwa without it.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
I opted for a full
night raid my only major mistake (but a biggie), pre game i'd thought
about how i'd play it, did I want to go night or dawn, I imagined the
chevys gunning it through the desert in dawns early light with the
burning objectives in the background and then preceded to see them
getting gunned down in an ambush, Kufra stylee. So I went for full
darkness, the sneaky option.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
To the game, sorry
about the lack of turn photos, you'll get the gist hopefully.
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Pre game recce move, HQ
& T-Patrol heads towards it's first objective on the west side of
the town, G-Patrol does the same on the East.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Turn 1. LRDG It must be
black as pitch, as no one can see for toffee.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Jerry T1. They were on
“recon” in the desert somewhere...</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Turn 2. LRDG. more of
the same, shooting at them however, T-Patrol must still have a load
of sand in their goggles and can't see further than the chevy in
front, G-Patrol find their mark, but the tracer rounds don't catch.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Turn. 3. LRDG. T chevys
head towards objective 2 passing obj 1, unleashing a torrent of m.g.
And breda fire but not having cleared that sand, strike home but not
enough to get the ammo truck burning. CIC and 2IC pull up to obj 1
readying their charges, no need the gunners managed to set the truck
ablaze, meanwhile on the other side of town G-Patrol do the same and
gun it towards obj four on the hill, again two chevys heading towards
the centre of town to rendevous with HQ and that last obj number
five. Things are looking good (I was a little surprised, as I
imagined pre-game that it would be quite difficult to get them going
through m.g. Fire, but then when you're rolling a bucketfull of dice
it pays off eventually).</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Jerry. I'm hazy on
whether they entered the fray turn 2 or 3 (I think it's probably 3),
they appeared right at my exit point though. A unit of bikes spot the
burning trucks from a long way off and head towards the town.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb382/TheBowlerHat/The%20Raid/20121203_190058.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb382/TheBowlerHat/The%20Raid/20121203_190058.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
G-Patrol strike. </div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Turn 4. LRDG. The
mainstay of T-Patrol carry on towards obj 2, HQ and two chevys head
towards the truck in the centre of town guns blazing. Obj two goes up
as T-Patrol finds it's mark again, along with the town centre obj
making even more noise attracting the local garrisons attention,
things are about to get a lot warmer, literally. G-Patrol makes it
too the bottom of the hill, however the night takes hold again and
their target is lost in the dark</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Jerry. Here they come.
Unleashing hell on the LRDG, the 2 R/m.g. & HMG platoons engage,
on the east G-Patrol is peppered by a r/m.g. But shrugs the fire off,
the other rifle m.g. And HMG platoon rake T-Patrol prior to their
assault luckily the assault fails under a massive hail of Lewis,
Vickers and Breda fire, they lose a few stands and unsurprisingly get
pinned down which is where they stay for the rest of the game, “you
know hans I think they've moved off,” “yes Fritz, so what's all
that noise, it took me time to dig this scrape and i'm thinking of adding a bathroom!”.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Turn 5.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
LRDG. Turn Five. Let's
get the f**k outta dodge.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Turning tail and
heading for the hills T patrol and H.Q. About face and head back
south through the town trying to duck m.g. Fire. G-Patrol attempts
the same, leaving the broken down breda truck to take out that final
objective, but to no avail.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Jerry. The iron fist
closes.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Here come the armoured
cars, the bain of the LRDG, fast moving, armoured and bristling with
automatic fire, they head into town from the west. The krads head
north towards town along with the easterly R/m.g. platoon. The amount
of lead that jerry unleashes whittles T almost to nothing, 2IC spends
a lot of time jumping from truck to truck, the CIC is protected by a
building and lots of burning chevys. G-Patrol manages to shrug off
the limited fire from the r/m.g. Platoon.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb382/TheBowlerHat/The%20Raid/20121203_194929.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
The net begins to close.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Turn 6.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
2IC and breda still
don't find their mark, the final objective must be well hidden.
G-Patrol gets into the desert with the CIC riding shotgun to face the
krads coming straight at them along with the closing infantry platoon
on the east. The net is closing, maybe one or two of G-Patrol could
make it through the pass...</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Jerry. Another 222
platoon enters the field from the South along with a pair of Pz4s who
block the pass. Meanwhile back in town the last of T-Patrol burns,
the breda from G-Patrol has a new pilot in the form of the 2IC after
he lost his Ford trying to block the 222's in.
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The r/m.g. Platoon
descend on the chevys of G-Platoon and demolish it, leaving the
platoon commander and one other to escape the melee.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The CIC is last seen
heading towards the krads guns blazing as a bike goes up, then
nothing.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Turn 7.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
LRDG (or what's left)</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Gunning it through the
pass, what's left of G-Patrol the commander decides discresion at
this point is probably best. We're a foot away and only two Pz4s to
go...</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Jerry.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Opens fire, the second
to last of G-Patrols truck goes up, the platoon commander
contemplates the long walk home, well others have made it before.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
I now know dawn would have been the best route to head down, that 8" move at night meant the infantry could keep up with me, along with everything else. I'll need to optimize my xtra m.g. layout, and get my head round the new warrior saves and think a little more about position. Overall the battle was awesome, and maybe me an Lee can squeeze a couple of games in next time, only another 5/6 raiding missions to complete, should have the Murzuq game me and Scary biscuits are working on done by then as well.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>

And as you can tell i'm still getting the hang of my new camera, those beatiful yellow hues, i'll get there..<br />
Anyroad in January 1941 the LRDG headed out on their first major raid, the plan, to destroy the planes at Murzuq airfield prior to the combined attack with the Free French on the Fezzan fort of Kufra, Murzuq airfield being the closest Italian airbase to Kufra and the greatest threat any of the desert raiders was to know, namely aircraft.<br />
The raid was a success, the opposition forces were holed up in Murzuq fort suppressed by G-Patrol and their 37mm Bofors, as the mainstay of T-Patrol headed off to attack the airfield, the Free French officer Colonel d'Ornano and Trooper <span class="st">R. J. Moore</span> being gunned down my an m.g. nest on the airfield perimeter. Three Ghibli light bombers were destroyed in their hangar along with roof, the plumes of smoke seen for miles around.<br />
On the subject of their success, the attack by the Free French on Kufra fort succeded it became the forward base for the LRDG and a lull ensued for T-Patrol who stationed the fort over the summer months. Prior to the main raid the first fight between modern special forces took place, near the Gebel Sherif Wadi. The Autosahariana the italian counterpart to the LRDG ambushed T-Patrol as headed it towards Kufra on a pre assault reconnaisance. T-Patrol lost several vehicles as the italians opened up with their vehicle mounted AA guns, chevys were shreded and lives were lost.<br />
For all you early war desert fans the word on the web is Mike "the special force" Haught is currently writing a Murzuq assault scenario for Flames, so watch his space for that and this space for a mock up of the Murzuq hangar, when i get the time.<br />
Into the Fezzan...<br />

Here's something, hopefully of interest to anyone with an interest in the LRDG or British armoured regiment or just a passing interest in the early/mid war, i've just found on the Pathe site a film called desert advance, unfortunately it has no sound, however what it does have is footage of the LRDG (i assume G-Patrol, i've not spotted any markings, yet) mounting and driving Ford F-30 (not the erroneously titled Land Rovers, search fu is not strong with this one), also Mk IV A13 Mk 2s cruiser tanks titled Crusaders, there's also footage of what appears to be a Libyan/Egyptian desert town, it looks like Siwa, but with not enough experience? Please excuse my ignorance.<br />
Hope this is of help, to any or all. Enjoy. <br />

And for too many reasons to list here i left the job i'd known for the last 14 years, i know what you're thinking, money :) hence another reason i went to visit Luke down at Onslaught. He's had the Battlefront Raiding tube down there for quite a while now and as i can't really justify buying more Flames toys (i've got enough to paint), i thought i could pick this up. So i wandered through the door, looking around for anything new, redundancy burning a hole in my pocket and then i saw it, Star Wars the miniature game!<br />
Roll back two weeks. The day after i accepted redundancy i'd been round my mate mikes for a stupendous game of Wings of War, it's 1917 (i think) messine ridge a last look before H-Hour, the aim of the game each side (3 Allied players, 2 German) to recce, photograph 3 different spots and then bomb one of two targets, i was to play my Great Grandad, he flew in WWI in the RFC starting out at lowly sergeant and by the time he retired (as a test pilot) Goup Captain John (Jack) 'oogie' Noakes (more on him at some stage, i'm hoping to do a blog, i need to get the info from my Gran). As it turned out, i managed to recce 2 spots my comrade the other whilst the third player duked it out with jerry, I then proceeded to fly off the german side of the map, this being my second game of Wings of War (Wings of Glory), manouvering and judging those distances not being my greatest skill. Got back in the photography plane, flew down managed to photo all three targets, realised i couldn't immelman in my bulky plane and managed to fly off the map just keeping my base on map, but by then jerry was on me, i was shot down with photo plates in hand in no mans land! It was about 1 in the morning by now, with nobody having completed their objectives, we decided to shoot it out. And with a last turn of my cards i managed to shoot jerry down as he got on my tail (this was what i wanted, as with a pair of twin vickers K on a pintel facing rear), i was hoping to chew him up, i did and with a final salute down he went. We won a war of attrition, however not as desperate as the below, 11,000 men disappered under the messine ridge as the Brits detonated the explosives below, according to some accounts the explosion was heard as far away as London.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
'Game pics to follow'</div>
While we were having a break a pal told me that fantasy flight (wings of glory) were about (how i heard it, i need to clear my ears out) to release a version of wings based on Star Wars, i was, shall i say a little excited, so when i spotted it in the shop, i whipped his last copy off the shelf and also got an extra Y-Wing & Advaced Tie fighter (Darth Vader!). :) It resembles WoW which i'm very happy about, i love how simple WoW is, it makes for me, a fun game. You get a dial to select a manouver (rather than cards) you choose one at a time rather than the previous three cards, with pilot skills, shields, target lock and proton torpedos, a little different from WoW, hhhhmmmmm proton torpedos. But basically the same game all flying is on the same level, so no messing with height or 3D space...Here's to playing my first game.TThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06864634690185960352noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-215759120762257090.post-40522908338783510322012-09-16T14:18:00.000+01:002012-09-21T14:12:03.345+01:00Ralph and Alastair, no they aren't a posh gay couple.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb382/TheBowlerHat/R%20and%20A/A2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
While most of time of late as been taken up with painting my LRDG list, i've been trying my hand at sculpting. A pal of mine lent me some green stuff year or so back do add some pipes connector boxes to my nebelwerfers after i'd seen John Boultwoods aka WPB on the BF forums, later i found out that John hadn't used GS (he was using wire and plasticard), so in a roundabout way it's all johns fault, i then moved on to add tarps to my BAR light mkVI's, battlefront has a good how to so if you're interested check it out.<br />
I've been doing a lot of headswaps of late, with a limited amount of poses for the LRDG rifle teams and drivers/gunners, i've been messing around with the 8th army rifle platoon figures, removing bayonets, backpacks, adding trousers, converting mortar round carriers to satchel charges. So i've been playing with a lot of GS and as always had a bit left over, i got fed up of creating more sandbags and tarps. An thought i'll see if i can sculpt a head, so 15 heads later i was happy not only with the result but the size to, whilst creating them i thught if i can do that, maybe i can do the body to, after doing a bit of research on armatures. I got myself a pair of needle nosed pliers, some silver coloured brass/copper wire .3mm (i think) both from ebay for a few quid. I've found with Alastair (see below) getting the armature right first is very important for the pose (Ralph is standing bolt upright so the armature was quite easy), then after that, it's just getting the GS plastered on right.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Alastairs based on Alastair timpson he became CO of G-Patrol LRDG after Michael Crichton Stuart was injured, he was commanding G-2 when the descision was made to try and destroy and confuse the enemy by lobbing/placing satchel charges in the back of Italian trucks traveling along the Hon-Misrata road, in his book "In Rommels Backyard" he admits to only being able to place two charges after a lot of messing about with placing a roadblock further and further out into the road. He explains it a lot better than i can and it has an amusing ending when they get flagged by some italian truckers an try to fix their broken down truck.</div>

He's currently missing his satchel charge/hand from his arm, although i've sculpted them they'll get added when i mount him on some plasticard, he's supposed to be crouching behind a fuel drum, waiting for a truck to pass, he'll be made into one of my objectives.<br />

I've been an advocate of using dettol as a paint stripper for a while now, after a few days most of the paint comes away by itself, a quick scrub in a soapey bath with a toothbrush and the rest will come away all good I here you cry. However leaving your resin trucks and tanks in there for a few months, is not a good idea (don't say “no s**t, sherlock”, I can here you), if you're of a weaker disposition please look away now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb382/TheBowlerHat/Dettol/DSC00993.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb382/TheBowlerHat/Dettol/DSC00993.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

As I was crying into my milk yesterday afternoon, I explained what had happened to the boss, an she said (along with a sharp intake of breath) “well I could have told you that”, if only earlier.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
So there's my tale of woe, heed my warning, lest ye get a visit from the resin eater... </div>

<span style="font-size: small;">No it's not my new late night activity, although... Anyroad it's been a while since i last posted, just a quickie for now, hence no pics.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">My latest discovery for paint stripping, Fairy Power Spray, i've been looking for something fast acting, unlike dettol. I'm converting and head swapping a load of my LRDG troopers, to give them that individual look, with the prospect of twenty small stand rifle teams and only 3 different poses to work with, i thought i'd do some chop and change. A pal (cheers Mike AATW) has given me some bailed out british figures, i can whip their bereted heads off (vive le republic!), but they're painted an needed a bit of a clean.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">So too business.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">I sprayed it on the figure in question, white metal (i'm sorry to say i can't give any plastics advice, but i've heard it works on resin), it started too work almost straight away, i took a toothbrush too it after 5 mins and with a bit of effort it came away, i sprayed more on and left for another 20 mins same process and it came away with less effort, it washes of with a quick water bath, unlike dettol. Result! So for a fast acting stripper (Dita von Teese, hhhrrrrrrr) give it a shot.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: small;">Til next year...</span>TThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06864634690185960352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-215759120762257090.post-82362093597269782092011-09-24T08:48:00.001+01:002011-09-24T08:57:34.429+01:00The cavalry's coming, I hope you brought your goggles...<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;">With the advent of War in the desert comes dust clouds, they give concealment to anyone targeted through them (+1 to hit). </span></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;"></span></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;">With every move by a vehicle over 4”-12"a medium base sized amount of dust is produced and a marker is placed immediately behind said vehicle and any move over 12” or part thereof, another is produced. However i'm not likely to ever need that many, all those unreliable tanks breaking down without a recovery vehicles isn't a good idea, as I found out in the two games i've played with them. </span></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />

<div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;">I wasn't going to do a “how to” as BF have done two, one you can find on their site and the other in “Hellfire and back” I thought i'd kind of document it all the same. No pre-painted pictures i'm afraid, I didn't think about pics or documenting until i'd started painting, so there's a little blurb below. The HF&B “how to” is spot on the only part I found difficult was using straight white paint on a naturally occurring item, but I got over it (sort of).</span></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Dust%20clouds/CAM_1331.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Dust%20clouds/CAM_1331.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />

<div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;">First off, bases, I picked up a load of the mdf medium size bases from Ebay and as I read somewhere, they are easier to pick up (literally) than the official BF ones, cheaper too. Poundshop pre-mix plaster, this plaster is going to form the (for want of a better term) base of the base ie: the desert floor, so it makes up part of the visual, instead of being hidden under static grass, I prefer to use the cheap stuff it gives a grittier texture, the posh stuff gives a smoother feel and quick drying but this isn't what we need on this occasion. I picked up a basing tip recently, when first applying the plaster, dip the tool you're using in the water and use this to smooth out a thin layer, then add the rest, the watered down layer helps the bulk of the plaster adhere to the base, rather than it lifting off as you're sculpting. Once you've got a decent covering lightly drag the edge of the tool you're using over it, this helps to lift it a little and gives a more realistic surface and something the drybrushing during painting can pick up later. Then I added a few stones and other bits of balast just to break it up, glued down with a layer of PVA.</span></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: small;">Painting sequence, basecoat English Uniform, 2 x light drybrush of desert yellow, drybrush buff, stones painted with a 50/50 mix of buff/white followed by a final highlight of white (shudder). Then a layer of matt varnish.</span></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />

And having no air compressor, helped in my decision. :)</span></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

I wanted to model them on the Fallschirm-Sturmgeschutz-Brigade 12 but then realised the points would bust my 1750 army, also the 12th had stug IV's Saukopf mantel and not the Stug III g's that i have (from the "open fire" box set), in my studies i've found that the III g's tankers started to add a guard to the top of there guns as detritus that fell into the gap would stop the gun being traversed so high. So i wanted to convert, but never got the chance, i'd like to in the future and if the idea inspires anyone i think it'd be great to make them your own.</span></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br />

However i am a winner, a little while back the guys over at <a href="http://www.modeldads.co.uk/Life-at-the-Front/wordpress/">modeldads</a> ran a competition for a new decal sheet for late war Normandy, they'll be producing it along with <a href="http://www.mustanggamesystems.com/mgs-custom-decal-sets.html">mustang games</a> , and as a result (i think by default) i've won a copy of the new sheet. Which as it happens has landed at the right time, i recently bought myself some barbed wire from <a href="http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/antenocitis-workshop-barbed-wire.html">antenocitis</a> and have been meaning to make some minefield and barbwire markers, the decal sheet includes some german mine warning signs. I'll also be able to use the St. Lo sign for a Fallschirmjager command stand. The road signs would probably look awesome on a well camouflaged pak40 poking it's nose down a sunken bocage lane, i do need some objectives, damn you modeldads and your inspiring ways.</span></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Anyroad i've got enough projects to be going on with.</span></div><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Cheers Modeldads.</span></span>TThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06864634690185960352noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-215759120762257090.post-72466729609013107082011-08-24T11:53:00.000+01:002011-08-24T11:53:10.464+01:00Early War get's a look in.<span class="917540510-24082011"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In a change from the previously advertised products, i'm going to do a little conversion "how to" in the near future on the </span></span><a href="http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=2116?"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">British armoured regiment</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> as they're off to North Africa, i'll be adding some sand guards, messing around with Besa m.g.s. and maybe casting some turret slopes coverting the A13 Mark IIIs to Mark IVa's however if anyone wants to swap 5 for 5 turrets i'd be more than happy or if anyones got any extras floating around (I don't have a copy of HF&B yet, so i'm not sure of the exact layout of my company). If you can work your way through, you should be able to get your infantry a safer haven. More foxes than hare.</span></div><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Trenches/CAM_1285.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="219" src="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Trenches/CAM_1285.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />

<br />
</div><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"></div><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"></div><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Equipment:</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Something to cut the styrofoam hot wire cutter (£7.10 including P & P) or junior hacksaw (£0.75p-£1.00).</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Glasspaper. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Trenches/CAM_1231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Trenches/CAM_1231.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">I started by cutting out the styrofoam, making sure I could get this right first, things to remember about these trenches is they're based on german trenches a friend Safety Markings reliably informed me that the germans angled there trenches at about 90º to aid with water run off and floored them with planks, this aided in the war against trenchfoot and generally in keeping things drier. This is of use to us as we can use the whole of the width of the lollipop sticks .</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Pre hotwire cutter i used a junior hacksaw to cut them into shape, it worked out well, however I only cut one of the trench pieces out (I'm not sure how long the blade would stay sharp, when cutting 8ft's worth) and as you can find them in the poundshop or local supermarket for less than or a quid, it's a cheaper option than the cutter, however if you're going to produce a lot of terrain/models from styrofoam investing in your own cutter is going to be your best bet (or have a mate you could "borrow" it off ;). </div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">So the styrofoam needs to be cut into 4 inch lengths 11mm deep by 10mm high this is main trench wall try and get this as flat as possible with the glasspaper (<b>safety time</b> this will produce a lot of fine dust, so get on your dust mask time, i did this into a plastic bag, which saves on time clearing up). </div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Trenches/CAM_1234.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Trenches/CAM_1234.jpg" width="281" /></a></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
<br />
</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Trim the lollipop sticks to a 4 inch length (official trench piece length is 8 inches, but comes supplied at), then glue the styrofoam bank to the front of the stick with the PVA glue.</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Now's time to cut the coffee stirrers to the correct length (if you've got the thicker ones, these'll do, try and save the thinner ones for the upright posts), once again 4 inches, it's time to start thinking about whether you're gonna have any missing planks lining the edge of your trench, if so you can cut these as you go. Now take the sciber/nail you are going to use as a scribe, to mark your notch along the length of the stirrer, so rather than cutting and gluing the stirrer to represent planks you are marking it too represent the look, saving time and effort, get a deep enough recess to hold a decent ink wash. </div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Once the sloped bank has dried in place take two of the cut down and marked stirrers and glue these to the main trench wall (10mm one) these should be a good fit, they can and have probably warped, so try and get them as flat as possible before gluing. Take some of the thinner stirrers and cut yourself some uprights (posts) these'll be 2.5mm by 10mm high and glue these into place, i've glued three along the length of the trench, I now think that maybe four would be more suitable at this scale.</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Trenches/CAM_1235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="301" src="http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee367/Terrain101/Trenches/CAM_1235.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"></div><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"></div><div class="western" style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">So you now have your naked trench, take some premix filler (available in most good quality poundshops) and fill those gaps where the stirrers have warped or didn't quite meet the bank. Once dried it's time to spruce it up, you can carve yourself some craters using the rounded end of the stirrers for smaller craters and same again with the lollipop sticks. Take the odd cut down plank push this into place on the front slope, remove then glue in place. If you can find them, the odd crate or oil drum scattered around using the same process as the plank, if you can track some down as the ones i'd got weren't big enough (N gauge is not 15mm), could you drop me a line? Sandbags from greenstuff are a good addition, i've done this on a few of the trenches but haven't got round to painting them yet. I think if you're going to head down the filler route for texture rather than sand on the front of the bank, you'd be better off applying this before the detritus. So PVA to hand, spread across the banks, then sprinkle on the sand.</div><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />

I'm proud of the way they turned out and after the author gave me the thumbs up, what more could i ask for.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span class="554041213-13062011">They'll be a useful addition to any of the fortifications missions in Flames of War. And with the advent of the 2nd Fallschirmjager list from "Earth and Steel" Battlefront's latest compilation book on axis forces in Normandy, i can take them as a field fortification along with plenty of different types of defences be they field or coastal.</span></span><br />

</div><div></div><div><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span class="554041213-13062011">As Harvey's <a href="http://www.modeldads.co.uk/Life-at-the-Front/wordpress/?p=1524">"how to"</a>s are already out there, i thought i'd let them speak for themselves you could always pop over to <a href="http://modeldads.co.uk/">Modeldads</a> and take a look for yourself and why not have a browse too, it's always worth a look. </span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span class="554041213-13062011">I'm currently working on 8ft of trenchlines as somewhere for my jager to defend and a couple of AT bunkers to shore things up, more on them later. So watch this space in the future for a breakdown on their construction, and hopefully one or two "how to"s of my own..</span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span class="554041213-13062011"></span></span></div>TThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06864634690185960352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-215759120762257090.post-74134042679783426792011-06-08T12:59:00.000+01:002011-06-08T12:59:05.230+01:00Early days<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Scratchbuilt terrain and more coming to you soon.</span>TThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06864634690185960352noreply@blogger.com0
